Hartford Hospital Uses ARRA Funds to Perform Interdisciplinary Research in Neuropsychiatry

An estimated 200,000 people undergo bariatric surgery—commonly known as weight-loss surgery—in the United States annually, according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Patients undergo a surgical procedure that alters their stomach or intestine to help them lose weight. The long-term outcomes of bariatric surgery, however, are mixed, with some patients regaining weight.

NIH ARRA Program Funds Infrastructure for Modern Nonhuman Primate Research

Many people today use touchscreen devices to manage or control various aspects of their lives, such as food deliveries, home lighting, and video entertainment. At the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC), laboratory monkeys are able to learn to use touchscreen technologies in a remarkably similar way. Located within the West Campus of Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), the ONPRC enables researchers to study nonhuman primates (NHPs) in a variety of settings using state-of-the-art monitoring and experimental systems (Figure 1).

Current Status and Future Enhancements to Animal Models for AIDS Research

The Office of AIDS Research (OAR) and the Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP) are co-sponsoring a two-day highly-focused, high-level workshop of experts in Animal Models for HIV. These invited individuals will provide the necessary background and latest perspectives to understand the status of existing and emerging animal models, as well as gaps in knowledge and resources that limit or circumscribe their use in HIV research.
