An estimated 200,000 people undergo bariatric surgery—commonly known as weight-loss surgery—in the United States annually, according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Patients undergo a surgical procedure that alters their stomach or intestine to help them lose weight. The long-term outcomes of bariatric surgery, however, are mixed, with some patients regaining weight.
